The American Latino experience is a very fast experiment in the making, which means every book of non-fiction on the subject is just a moment in time that expires as soon as it’s completed—even when it claims to chronicle the whole thing. A few we really like are Latinos: a Biography of the People, which offers a good summary from 1992; a history of the Zoot Suit Riots by Eduardo Obregón Pagán; Americanos, a collection of photographs edited by Edward James Olmos; and Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez.
