Sergei Eisenstein shot Viva Mexico in 1931, training and influencing a whole generation of Mexican film professionals that would go to on to produce a golden age in the 1940s and 1950s. Films by Cantinflas, the Mexican Charlie Chaplin, and Dolores del Rio would be seen by millions. After a period of decadence, Mexican film has experimented a roaring renaissance with world-class actors, directors, and screen-writers taking their films around the world. From the harsh reality of Amores Perros to the wonderful coming of age story Y Tu Mamá También, the likes of Gael García Bernal, Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Guillermo Arriaga, and Salma Hayek are building a great legacy for the rest of us to watch.
